Finding things - Item List
That Item list sure gets hard to read and find one thing sometimes, so I created separators for the assembly portion of my item list (I almost always sell assemblies). See how nice and easy it is to read, the items are sorted together. When you have the list open you can drag and drop the items anywhere you want - within the type at least.
I created an assembly item since I am sorting assemblies, (use an inventory item if you are sorting inventory), for the name I gave it one hyphen (-) and selected an income account, then move it to where I need it. Each one has to be a seperate name though, so the next one has two hyphens (–), and so on. It does use up the name list but I have room, and if it come to push or shove I can always merge them all and mark it inactive.
Odd but QB does not require a build list to create an assembly item.
You can skip to the end and leave a response. Pinging is currently not allowed.

But if you sort the list, either by clicking on a column heading or by using the “re-sort list” function (which sometimes is necessary) then you lose your arrangment, unfortunately.
How about item:subitems - and leaving the description blank? Holds better in the sorts, but isn’t as clean visually as your approach.

Your point is valid about the re-sorting aspect, but I am the kind that sets things up and doesn’t re-sort. Nice to see you stopping by Charlie.

Always looking forward to your notes on things, Rustler, here or in the QuickBooksGroup forums.
I guess I wanted to throw the comments here so that others are aware that there are some restrictions. Sometimes you don’t have the option NOT to sort, unfortunately. If you import a bunch of items via Excel sometimes you have to resort just to get them to show up. In some cases, just adding a bunch of items through the user interface messes up the item list and you have to resort. That doesn’t mean that your idea doesn’t work - it’s just that you have to keep in mind that sometimes you may have to rearrange things.
